Wii U still won't play DVDs or Blu-ray
06-16-2011 12:56 AM · Post: #1 Wii U still won't play DVDs or Blu-ray

Seems like Nintendo still hasn't learned, all the people that wanted DVD play back in the original wii still won't get it in the Wii u, according to, Satoru Iwata (Nintendo president).

Satoru Iwata, in a meeting with their investors, said it will only be able to run the 12cm proprietary disc and the 12cm discs for the Wii. Iwata, explained,

"Wii U does not have DVD or Blu-ray playback capabilities. The reason for that is that we feel that enough people already have devices that are capable of playing DVDs and Blu-ray, such that it didn't warrant the cost involved to build that functionality into the Wii U console because of the patents related to those technologies."

Despite this lack of support for other forms of disc media, Nintendo still gives their full support to third party developers, believing that it is "absolutely fundamental".

I think this is a fail. I'm pretty sure that there were a lot of people that wanted DVD playback on the wii. I know most of my friends did... But what do you guys think?

Omg XD hahahahaha their sales are going to go down so much because of that.... Well kinda they still have dedicated fans that will buy it.... And if I remember right, in the original wii's they were able to play movies.... They just didn't have a homebrew.... So what you did was bannerbomb your Wii and get dvdx sooooo I'm guessin that the same thing will happen for the new wii?

I know right? And yea, you could hack your wii and play DVD's but #1, not every one knows how to do that #2 didn't work on all the Wii's.

Expected result: SALES DROP.

There's to many reasons not to buy it, it'd be a lot easier to look for reasons to buy it rather than reasons not to.
